To harmonize international automotive quality system standards, major global automakers and associations established the ​​International Automotive Task Force (IATF)​​ in 1996. The IATF comprises the following members:

• ​​ISO/TC 176​​ (Technical Committee for Quality Management and Assurance under the International Organization for Standardization);
• National automotive associations: ​​ANFIA​​ (Italy), ​​CCFA​​ and ​​FIEV​​ (France), ​​VDA​​ (Germany);
• Automakers: ​​BMW, Chrysler, Fiat, Ford, General Motors, Renault, Volkswagen​​, etc.

The IATF developed the ​​ISO/TS 16949:2002​​ specification by integrating automotive industry requirements with the ISO 9001:2000 standard, approved by ISO/TC 176. This specification was updated to ​​ISO/TS 16949:2009​​ in 2009, and the current version is ​​IATF 16949:2016​​.
